2022 Award Winner Dr. Megan Lynch, The Pennsylvania State University

Dr. Lynch’s dissertation worked to promote and trace professional development school (PDS) teacher candidates’ development of socially just teaching microgenetically. With this focus, her dissertation contributes to the literature on NAPDS essentials #2 (clinical preparation), #4 (research and innovation), and advances the goals for essential #1 (a comprehensive mission that aims to advance equity, antiracism, and social justice).  In her study, Dr. Lynch found that in the coursework PDS interns took in conjunction with their field experiences, an inquiry-based teaching approach was necessary for teacher candidates to ask diverse questions and inquire into their practices in unique ways. She also uncovered that those opportunities for such inquiry in coursework were not enough to promote social justice development; it only created cognitive and emotional dissonance. Importantly, however, when inquiry-oriented social justice coursework was coupled closely with supervision, which also focused on socially just teaching, microgenetic development was evident for the teacher candidates.
